Discover Nancy!

Nancy is a city located in the North-East of France, in the heart of Europe, not far from Luxembourg, Germany and Belgium. City of Art and Science, it is also known for its XVIII century sites, classified as world heritage by UNESCO, its gardens and its outdoor terraces. With its Old City, and its maze of medieval streets, its sumptuous architecture from the Age of Enlightenment, the creativity of the Nancy School... the city of Nancy invites the visitor to stroll and make many discoveries.

In the streets of the Old City, around the Ducal Palace and the Cordeliers church, the gates of Craffe and Notre-Dame mark the time when Nancy was a walled city, huddled around the lordly castle. The city also keeps traces of the old fortifications, including the gates of the Citadel (16th century), Saint-Georges (17th century) and Desilles (18th century). Capital of the Dukes of Lorraine, Nancy escaped the covetousness of the Dukes of Burgundy. The tragic death of Charles the Bold in 1477, defeated by René II of Lorraine, marked the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Renaissance for Nancy. An enlightened sovereign, Charles III founded the "Ville Neuve" around 1588, a new city with straight streets cut at right angles, ordered on 2 main axes, the Saint-Dizier street on one hand, and the Saint-Jean and Saint-Georges streets on the other. The ducal palace, built in the 16th century, now houses the Lorraine Museum.

However, it was on the initiative of Stanislas, former sovereign of Poland and last Duke of Lorraine, that the town planning of Nancy acquired an exceptional place in the history of art. A triumphal arch (Porte Héré) in honor of Louis XV leads to a square (Place de la Carrière) where the Government Palace stands. Finally, Nancy has a promenade, designed in the 17th century (the Cours Léopold) and a botanical garden, laid out in 1752 by King Stanislas: the famous Parc de la Pépinière. The heart and jewel of the capital of Lorraine, Place Stanislas remains today one of the most remarkable architectural ensembles of the 18th century. It was elected as the favorite monument of the French in 2021, and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful squares in the world.

Another time, another appointment with history. At the end of the last century, the Ecole de Nancy gave the world Art Nouveau: Eugène Vallin, Emile André, Victor Prouvé, Louis Majorelle, Jacques Gruber, Emile Gallé, the Daum brothers... Architects, cabinetmakers, ironworkers, ceramists and glassmakers joined forces to build chambers of commerce, banks, breweries, department stores and especially private and bourgeois houses.

Sound and light show

A new monumental sound and light show transforms the Place Stanislas Let yourself be surprised by the new monumental sound and light show. Every summer evening, from mid-June to mid-September, its innovative universe transforms the facades of Place Stanislas, one of the largest projection surfaces in Europe. For 20 minutes, La Belle Saison evokes a symbolic day, through different scenes that bring back to life the history of Nancy: the Battle of 1477, the Renaissance, the reign of Stanislas, Art Nouveau and Art Deco as well as the dynamism of Nancy today. La Belle Saison's artistic bias is to leave room for contemporary visuals that reappropriate the different aesthetics, strong visual effects, a musical creation in perfect symbiosis and traveling between contemplation or exaltation, sound design effects promoting immersion or the occasional use of laser projectors to highlight certain architectural details and surprise at the perfect moment. Let yourself be transported by your sensations and emotions.
